The Athens city Democratic Central Committee voted unanimously Wednesday to appoint Donkey Coffee manager Ben Ziff to serve at-large on City Council to fill the vacancy left by Pete Kotses, who resigned in recent weeks.
Ziff, whoâs never held public office and was the only candidate running in the primary for Kotsesâ seat, is expected to occupy office in the coming weeks once paperwork is finalized with the state. He was the sole candidate the committee considered for the job and was viewed by city and party leaders as a favorite in the weeks leading to Wednesday s meeting.
âIâm feeling good. Iâm honestly rather overwhelmed, sorry,â Ziff said with laughter in an interview following the meeting. âNot that I wasnât excited or looking forward to it, but itâs hit me in a much more emotional way than I was expecting.â

The San Diego County Democratic Central Committee passed two resolutions on Tuesday, April 20, against animal cruelty for human entertainment, reports
One of these resolutions calls on the San Diego City Council to put an end to the SeaWorld firework show.
SeaWorld s firework show just started back up again for Spring. It occurs every Friday and Saturday night at 8:00 P.M.
The San Diego Democrats resolution says the SeaWorld firework shows, frighten companion animals, terrifies lonely shelter dogs and cats, and wreaks havoc on wildlife, often causing dogs and cats to flee and become lost and injured, and the toxic chemicals released into the air and water poison the environment.

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Tuesday, the San Diego County Democratic Central Committee unanimously passed two resolutions they say go against animal cruelty for human entertainment.
According to Democratic Central Committee member Bryan Pease, one of the resolutions aims to ban “the use of torture devices at rodeos, including electric prods, shocking devices, flank or bucking straps, wire tiedowns, sharpened or fixed spurs, and rowels.” Pease says the Los Angeles City Council recently voted to ban these devices.
The second resolution passed by the San Diego County Democratic Central Committee Tuesday, calls on the San Diego City Council to end the SeaWorld fireworks.
Half Moon Bay resident Steven Booker has announced his campaign for San Mateo County Supervisor. He is running against San Carlos Mayor Laura Parmer-Lohan and Menlo Park Councilman Ray Mueller for Don Horsleyâs seat in District 3, which encompasses the Coastside. Candidates will face off in the primary in June 2022.
If elected, he would be the first African American and Coastsider to serve on the board in many years.
âI do think we need more coast representation,â he said. âSometimes I feel like people on the coast are forgotten about and donât have true representation.â
Born and raised in the Bay Area, Booker did not start out in politics. He served in the U.S. Air Force in 1987 and then attended the College of San Mateo to become an electrician. He found himself deeply involved with the International Brotherhood of Electric Workers and has served as the groupâs political director and community affairs liaison since 2014.
