Release Journalists Wrongfully Detained, Sentenced
(Bangkok) – Myanmar’s military junta should stop prosecuting journalists and end its assault on independent media, Human Rights Watch said today, releasing a video about the media crackdown.
Since the February 1, 2021 coup, Myanmar’s junta has arrested 98 journalists, 46 of whom are currently in detention, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP). Six journalists have been convicted, including five for violating section 505A of the penal code, a new provision that makes it a crime to publish or circulate comments that “cause fear” or spread “false news.” “Fake news” appears to be any news that the authorities do not want to reach the public.

At least 20 killed in Yangon prison riot crackdown: local media 1 minute read
Bangkok Desk, Jul 25 (EFE).- At least 20 inmates have been killed in a crackdown by Myanmar security forces against Friday’s protest at Yangon’s Insein prison, the Democratic Voice of Burma reported.
According to the local media outlet, which cites an unnamed source close to the military, the soldiers opened fire on protesters. Five women were among those killed.
The military also arrested staff at the prison, where hundreds of political prisoners are held, the outlet reported on Saturday night.
The protest began on Friday morning in the women’s annex to demand medical care amid the rapid spread of Covid-19 inside the prison, the Association for the Assistance of Political Prisoners (AAPP) said.
