Ontario pushes back plan to have first doses of COVID-19 vaccine administered in long-term care homes

TORONTO In the face of a COVID-19 vaccine supply shortage, Ontario health officials have announced that they are pushing back the plan to have first doses administered in all nursing homes and high-risk retirement facilities. The province had hoped to get needles into arms by Feb. 5, but now says Feb. 10 is a more realistic timeline. The deadline to administer shots to those vulnerable groups, which also includes First Nations elder care home residents, was originally set for Feb. 15, but officials said they had hoped to cross that benchmark 10 days sooner than planned. As well, the province says that vaccine recipients, other than residents of a long-term care home, will now be required to receive their second dose of vaccine 35 to 42 days after the first shot due to supply availability.

Matawa First Nations ask for inclusion in Phase 1 COVID-19 vaccinations

Under Operation Remote Immunity, which began Tuesday, Ontario will initially administer vaccine to 31 remote-access First Nations, including five members of Matawa First Nations. The project excludes road-access First Nations such as Aroland, Long Lake # 58, Ginoogaming, and Constance Lake, all of which have experienced COVID-19 outbreaks. A letter from Matawa First Nations to General Rick Hillier (retired) on behalf of the four communities calls for their inclusion in the first phase of the province s vaccination program. Hillier chairs the vaccine distribution task force. The letter expresses frustration that the Matawa First Nations with outbreaks are currently left out of the program, and says that at the very least, any surplus vaccine from Operation Remote Immunity should be earmarked for them.
