As you all know, the Secretary was the first woman to be governor of Rhode Island, where she kick-started the state’s economy and achieved a record number of jobs and the lowest unemployment in a generation thanks to investments in infrastructure, education, and job training. As governor, she prioritized creating jobs, supporting workers, and improving the quality and availability of services in the care economy, including supporting wage increases for care workers.

Gina M Raimondo Sworn in as 40th U S Secretary of Commerce

Today, Gina M. Raimondo was sworn in as the 40th U.S. Secretary of Commerce. Secretary Raimondo was sworn in by Vice President Kamala Harris after a bipartisan vote of 84-15 in the United States Senate. In her role as Secretary of Commerce, Raimondo will lead a key agency focused on promoting economic growth, which includes the International Trade Administration, the Bureau of Industry and Security, U.S. Census Bureau, U.S. Patent and Trade Office, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Economic Development Administration, Minority Business Development Administration, National Telecommunications and Information Administration, Bureau of Economic Analysis, and National Institute of Standards and Technology.

Scholarship program launched to help children of frontline workers who died of COVID-19

(WLNE) – Rhode Island General Treasurer Seth Magaziner announced the start of a program that would award children of frontline workers who died of COVID-19 with a college scholarship. The Frontline Heroes Fund was launched to “honor the legacy of those frontline workers who have kept the state economy running during the pandemic and to support the future success of their families.” https://twitter.com/RITreasury/status/1367191965775839234?s=20 The $2,500 scholarships will be eligible to Rhode Islanders via their CollegeBound Saver account. CollegeBound Saver is a tax-free savings plan which allows Rhode Island residents to affordably save for college.

Governor Gina Raimondo PHOTO: GoLocal Tuesday will be Gina Raimondo’s last day as Governor of the State of Rhode Island unless something dramatically changes in the United States Senate. On Monday afternoon, Texas Republican U.S. Senator Ted Cruz’s effort to block Raimondo’s confirmation came to an end.  The Senate voted 84-15 to end debate and allow the Senate to vote. The expected vote on Raimondo scheduled for after 2:00 PM on Tuesday will end Raimondo’s dominance over Rhode Island politics over the past decade. During Raimondo s dominance, she was elected as General Treasurer in 2010 and took office in 2011. During her period of political leadership she saw the rise of four Speakers of the House Bill Murphy, Gordon Fox, Nick Mattiello and now Joe Shekarchi.
