The community worker scheme, which helps unemployed people gain work experience and improve their chances of finding a job, has been extended.
The scheme originally launched in 2009 and reformed in 2016, is also meant to provide local councils, NGOs and other entities with workers for routine operations such as cleaning and maintenance of road signs.
Times of Malta reported that local councils across Gozo had flagged a rise in the incidence of skiving by people enrolled in this scheme. Many workers were not found on-site and while others did carry out the work assigned to them, they would fit in private jobs during working hours, such as at people’s houses.

Not used to Batho Pele principles, Ntswaki Mbalu became a keyboard warrior after she visited the City-run health facility recently for medical attention.
Ntswaki’s experience turned to be a heartening story of ordinary people who discover a shared humanity.
She writes that following her retrenchment during the lockdown, her medical aid ceased, compelling her to consult a public health institution for healthcare services.
“I was at pains trying to accept that I will have to use public healthcare services,” she told the minister, adding that she had had a negative encounter with nurses at the same clinic 15 years ago and was dreading a repeat.

It was a collective effort amassed over the years if not decades. Some architects of the triumph went down the chronicle, while the rest remain unsung heroes. Some champions of this worthy cause did not even get to see the light of their labour. Seen or otherwise, the fruition of their sweat and toil is alive to this day.
Listed below are some of the luminaries who dared execute a rebellion on a razor’s edge.
