The top official at the state agency charged with overseeing and maintaining the New York State Capitol on Tuesday in a letter to state lawmakers said a planning process is underway for the building s potential reopening.
Spectrum News, Office of General Services Commissioner RoAnn Destito wrote the public health and safety requirements for the building are currently being reviewed. The top Republican lawmakers in the state Senate and Assembly on Friday urged state officials to develop a plan for reopening the state Capitol building in Albany more than a year after it closed to the general public.
Senate Minority Leader Robert Ortt and Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay in a letter to Office of General Services Commissioner RoAnn Destito called for the reopening as more people are being vaccinated and the COVID-19 positive rate has decline in recent weeks.
“As the infection rate goes down and the vaccination rate goes up, COVID-related restrictions in place at our Capitol and Empire State Plaza have become clearly outdated and unnecessary in many cases, Ortt said in a statement. ALBANY The New York State Capitol store is now open online, the Office of General Services Commissioner RoAnn Destito said Monday, offering items previously sold only at the Empire State Plaza Visitor Center and Gift Shop in Albany. Face masks, tie tacks, ornaments and other souvenirs are available for purchase at nyscapitolstore.com as well as in person at the Empire State Plaza Visitor Center and Gift Shop in Albany.
The Plaza store is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. The online store is open 24 hours.
State Opens COVID Vaccination Site At SUNY Poly
Destito says the Governor’s number one priority is getting New Yorkers vaccinated.
The governor s office says to date, New York’s vaccine distribution sites have administered 79 percent of the first doses received from the federal government and 77 percent of the first and second doses.
An appointment is needed to get a vaccination.
To determine eligibility and schedule an appointment to receive their first dose, New Yorkers can utilize the state s Am I Eligible app or call the New York State Vaccination Hotline at 1-833-NYS-4VAX (1-833-697-4829).
Vaccinations are being given in the Wildcat Field House.
