   Española Valley High School is proposing changes to District School Board policies that affect student grading procedures to streamline the process and provide incentives for students to succeed.
   The changes include honor roll requirements, grade weighting for valedictorian and salutatorian calculations, and grade level classifications.
   High School Assistant Principal Jeffrey Sagor gave a presentation to the Española School Board at a Feb. 18 meeting about the proposed changes.
   He said when he was hired, he was told it was important to consistently work to improve academic performance. He said he thinks these updated policies and revisions can push students a step further.
Juan Velasquez never planned to attend the University of North Georgia (UNG).
The Dalton, Georgia, resident had a full scholarship to a college in Kentucky. But a family situation arose, making him the sole provider and keeping him at home.
Then Velasquez met Sarah (Junco) Petito, the former recruiter for UNG s College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP). The federally funded program helps students from migrant and/or seasonal farm work backgrounds transition into college life for the first year.
She encouraged Velasquez to enroll at UNG and join CAMP. He agreed. It s a decision that had a ripple effect throughout his college career and resulted in unexpected rewards.
