The 2021 season technically already began for the Columbus Crew due to CONCACAF Champions League play, but the MLS champions don’t begin the defense of their league title until Sunday when Supporters’ Shield winners the Philadelphia Union come to historic Crew Stadium. Despite brining home a championship last year, the Black & Gold still made a number of changes to the team’s roster to be ready to compete on multiple fronts this season.
As part of our preseason preview, Massive Report will go position by position and give readers a breakdown of what to expect in the coming year. We begin with the goalkeepers.

Shortly after the announcement of defender Michael Edwards, the Rapids announced another Homegrown signing, this time being US U-17 winger Dantouma “Yaya” Toure (dan-TOO-ma TOOR-ay). After acquiring his rights from the New York Red Bulls, Toure joins Colorado on a four-year contract with a club option for two more seasons, and is the fourth Homegrown signing in two days.
Before signing Toure to his contract, the club sent $50,000 of General Allocation Money (GAM) to the New York Red Bulls to acquire his Homegrown rights. If Toure meets certain performance-based thresholds, the Red Bulls will get additional GAM. They also would get a small portion of a transfer fee if Toure is sold to a new club in the future.
