THE HAGUE, Netherlands – 20 April 2021 – The Director-General of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), H.E. Mr Fernando Arias, met today with the Deputy Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran for Legal and International Affairs, H.E. Mr Mohsen Baharvand. The bilateral meeting was held in the margins of the Twenty-Fifth Session of the Conference of the States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention, taking place in The Hague from 20 to 22 April. The Director-General briefed the Deputy Foreign Minister on the OPCW’s progress in implementing the Chemical Weapons Convention, the Organisation’s activities in addressing challenges to achieving a world free of chemical weapons, and shared perspectives with the Minister on ways of strengthening cooperation between Iran and OPCW.

OPCW Signs Contract to Begin Construction of New Centre for Chemistry and Technology
The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and Dutch construction company Dura Vermeer yesterday signed the main construction contract for a new facility – the OPCW Centre for Chemistry and Technology (“ChemTech Centre”). The contract was signed by the OPCW Director of Administration, Mr Christopher Buck, and, on behalf of Dura Vermeer, by Mr David Snelleman. The contract signing was overseen by OPCW Director-General, H.E. Mr Fernando Arias, and CEO of Dura Vermeer, Mr Job Dura.
The Director-General stated: “By entering into this contract, the OPCW has taken a significant step towards the establishment of the ChemTech Centre. American Chemical Society Contributes $10,000 to Future OPCW Centre for Chemistry and Technology
The American Chemical Society (ACS) has contributed $10,000 to a special Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Trust Fund to support the construction of a new facility, the OPCW Centre for Chemistry and Technology (“ChemTech Centre”).
The contribution was formalised on 14 December 2020 through an exchange of letters.
ACS Chief Executive Office, Dr Tom Connelly, stated: “The ethical practice of chemistry is a core value of the American Chemical Society. We are honoured to support the new OPCW ChemTech Centre and its mission to train scientists and policymakers to protect humanity from future chemical weapon threats.
