Jakarta Archdiocese is to allow children and elderly people to resume attending public Masses but under several conditions during the Covid-19 pandemic, a church official said.
Father Samuel Pangestu, the archdiocese’s vicar general and head of its Covid-19 prevention team, said in a letter issued on May 5 that the decision was based on the current situation in Indonesia where the Covid-19 vaccination drive is in full swing to achieve herd immunity.

Days of heavy rain due to the tropical cyclone Seroja tropical, have affected 12 cities and districts in the province on Easter Sunday, killing at least 138 people, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency said on Thursday. About 61 people are reportedly missing, while 271 homes and 99 public facilities were damaged. More than 8,000 people were evacuated to shelters including ones belonging to the Catholic Church.

Catholic and Protestant leaders in Indonesia have stressed the need for Christians to reflect on the simplicity of Christmas celebrations amid the Covid-19 pandemic still gripping the country.
Father Vincentius Adi Prasojo, secretary-general of Jakarta Archdiocese, told a Dec. 21 discussion hosted by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency in Jakarta that Catholics should be able to find the true meaning of Christmas celebrations in such a situation.
