Solana Pacific’s Brainy Builders team project wins first place in state competition

The Brainy Builders, a First Lego League team (#37955) comprised of a group of skilled 6th graders from Solana Pacific Elementary School, competed in the virtual 2020-21 SoCal FLL championships on Saturday, April 10. The competition featured 30 teams from all over Southern California. The Brainy Builders won the first place Innovation Project Award and scored the third highest points in the live robot game which was observed by judges through streaming video.
The Brainy Builder’s innovation project was to encourage online students to be more active by making gamified obstacle courses using equipment that can be used indoors or outdoors. Their idea came to life with a donation of 165 buckets from Dixieline and the purchase of equipment by the Solana Beach School District which were distributed to all of the 6th g

A team of fifth grade students representing Skyline School in the Solana Beach School District achieved Highest Honors in the WordMasters Challenge a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 125,000 students annually. The Skyline team scored 181 points out of a possible 200 points in the second of three meets this year, placing them ninth in the nation.
Competing in the Blue Division, fifth grader Claire McEvoy earned a perfect score of 20 on the challenge. Nationally, only 39 fifth graders have achieved this result. Other students from Skyline who achieved outstanding results in the meet included Alaina Achtel, Claire Carter, Lila Gilbert and Benjamin Hext. Artwork by 10 students from Solana Pacific School and the Solana Beach School District’s Online Scholars’ was recently accepted as part of the San Diego Museum of Art exhibit “Young Art 2021: My World, Our Planet.” The environmentally-themed artwork will be on display at Balboa Park through May 9.
The 4-6 grade Solana Pacific students who will have their artwork shown at the San Diego Museum of Art (SDMA) include Sierra Liu, Kai Shaprut, Katelyn Zeng, Gabriela Morillo, Dal Piccol, Pela Hadley, Mia Lopez, Kenzo Karres and Cici Mei. Art by Online Scholars Maya Krishnan and Purvi Jain will also be on display.
