Burnham and Highbridge heroes of pandemic receive Somerset Medals
Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge’s community heroes of the Covid pandemic have received their Somerset Medals this week.
The Somerset Medal was launched by Somerset County Council to say a heartfelt thank-you to the best of the best.
Somerset’s Lord Lieutenant Annie Maw spoke at the start of the ceremony before the medals were presented last week.
As several local winners were unable to attend the ceremony last week, they received their awards on Monday in Burnham from county councillor Peter Clayton, as pictured here.
Burnham’s Ian Jefferies, pictured above, was instrumental in setting up the Burnham and Highbridge Coronavirus Community Support Group and organising the vaccination hubs at Berrow Medical Centre and the Mulberry Centre.

The construction of a new digital innovation centre in Taunton can finally begin following acceptance of central government funding.
The improvement scheme will see the upgrading of the Toneway Creech Castle junction. It was postponed last year to support the local economy during the coronavirus pandemic by minimising disruption on a key route into the county town. The project will ease traffic congestion and improve access to Taunton at a main pinch point on the town s highway network that suffers massive traffic disruption during peak periods. Key problems include limited stacking space for vehicles turning right into the A38 Bridgwater Road towards Monkton Heathfield. There is also queuing on the northbound and southbound approaches of Bridgwater Road. The junction lacks any capacity for future permitted development in Monkton Heathfield and is very poor for pedestrians and cyclists.
