Mortal Kombat is a shockingly faithful adaptation of the beloved video game franchise. The reboot had a lot to live up to from the games to the beloved original 1995 movie but it delivers both the gruesome, gratuitous violence and the cheeky catchphrases we, as fans, demand from the series. The Mortal Kombat universe is big, colorful, and brash; filled with eccentric, maniacal characters with impenetrable backstories.
If that is starting to sound familiar, you might be a pro-wrestling fan, too. Sure, no one gets their head cut off or their heart ripped out in pro wrestling (at least not yet), but the rest of the formula is pretty similar. The audience for a fighting game and a pro-wrestling show aren’t terribly dissimilar. In the plot of ‘Mortal Kombat’, Kung Lao (Max Huang) ends up being assassinated by Shang Tsung (Chin Han) when the villain invades the temple where the Champions of Earth trained for the tournament.
After breaking up with Nitara (Elissa Cadwell) in a bloody scene, Lao suffers the wrath of Tsung, who drains his life energy by uttering the classic line:
“Your soul is mine.”
In the history of the games, Kung Lao is also assassinated, but at the hands of Shao Kahn, and is resurrected by the witch Quan Chi, who transforms him into a vengeful spirit.

Real ’90s kids know “Mortal Kombat,” and real ’90s kids truly appreciate “Mortal Kombat.” That techno beat drops, that guy screams “mortal kombat!” and it’s like we’re back at the arcade, hammering sticky buttons in order to “finish him!!” as 8-bit blood spurts in pixelated bursts. The goofy but lovable 1995 movie adaptation, directed by maximalist action auteur Paul W.S. Anderson, was the entertainment for many pizza-fueled sleepovers, so if there’s one audience a remake has to please, it’s the ’90s kids (who are pushing 40 now). Somehow, director Simon McQuoid, in his feature directorial debut, has managed to update the film while also capturing that silly, digital-blood soaked magic.
