Video game movies tend to get a bad rap and usually for good reason. Yet over the last few years, we’ve seen filmmakers give these adaptions a little more substance and respect. While not perfect, films like 2018’s Tomb Raider were so much better than the likes of 2005’s Doom … and the 2019 Doom film too. So Mortal Kombat has made a return to film after the cash grab movies of the 1990s and looks pretty awesome from the trailers. Well, I was very kindly provided a screener’s link to the new film and all I can say is …
The Mortal Kombat Fight That Fans Thought Would Be Much Different
Mortal Kombat brought most of the series’ iconic fighters to the big screen. The original game’s characters were almost all present, delivering cool reimaginings of Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Kano, Sonya Blade, Raiden, Liu Kang, Reptile, Goro and Shang Tsung, though the absence of egotistical nut-punchin’ movie star Johnny Cage was sorely felt. Furthermore, mixed in among these were a couple of fighters who even I didn’t recognize.
I’ve played every game in the series, but I was scratching my head at the appearance of devil-winged Nitara and man-mountain Reiko. We didn’t have time to get to know the pair too well, either, as Reiko had his skull smashed in by Jax and Nitara was bisected in an awesome fatality involving Kung Lao’s razor-brimmed hat. Now, it turns out that at least one of these no-name fighters might have once been destined for bigger things, as fans have noticed that Nitara had a larger part in
Jessica McNamee would be stoked if her new Mortal Kombat film gets a host of sequels.
The 34-year-old Australian actress plays Sonya Blade in director Simon McQuoid s movie reboot of the fighting franchise, which began as a gory beat em up video game back in 1992.
Although talk of sequels was banned on set by McQuoid, there are already story ideas in place for future films, and Jessica will have no hesitation in portraying Sonya again if a follow-up gets the green light.
She said: I ve never been so excited in my life to play a character. I was able to really sink my teeth into this character, physically, but I also have some meaty dramatic and comedic scenes in there as well. So, I would be stoked if we went forward. The whole universe, that would be great.
Finish Him! Mortal Kombat 1995 vs. Mortal Kombat 2021 May 7, 2021
Mortal Kombat finally released in theaters and on HBO Max a few weeks ago, which means everyone and their mothers has watched the latest iteration of the popular video game and spent the last week either blasting it as the worst film
ever made or one of cinema’s great masterpieces.
My take? It’s an enjoyable action flick with a few decent fight scenes marred by some bad performances and dialogue. But who cares when “the chick gets her gut blown out, and you can see her spine,” as one of my friends so keenly pointed out via text message?
