IN a Carnival partly defined by virtual calypso shows, it’s difficult to picture just how much of a role audiences have played in the history of calypso. An enthusiastic crowd calling for encores can boost a calypsonian’s popularity, but audiences have also been known to destroy a calypsonian’s season and even damage a calypsonian’s reputation.
“I remember when I was a student going home to Guyana from UWI in Mona, I stopped off in Trinidad in 1968 and went to a calypso tent in the Palladium,” says calypso expert and former UWI English professor Dr Gordon Rohlehr.

HISTORY was created on Saturday night when Nisha Ramsook won the first Chutney/Soca Queen title and two brothers copped the first and second place in the Chutney/Soca Monarch competition.
Reigning monarch Imran “GI” Beharry singing in the last position, successfully defended his title. His brother Master Saleem placed second.
A total of 24 artistes competed for the two titles in the 2021 competition, including Damian Sookram and Prince JP from New York and Vanita Willie, Vicadi Singh and Tony Cuttz from Guyana.

Darryl “Farmer Nappy” Henry has won the 2021 International Soca Monarch (ISM), rebranded The Monarch, with his popular pandemic hit Backyard Jam.
What was considered an unusual competition setting for this type of event, Farmer Nappy along with ten other competitors performed without an audience at the National Academy for the Performing Arts, Port of Spain, in a pre-recorded final that aired on TV6 on Friday night.

Several local artistes have thrown their support behind the “end gender-based violence” movement that has swept the nation after the body of 23-year-old Andrea Bharatt was discovered in Aripo.
Among those stepping out were Machel Montano, Ravi Ravi B Bissambhar, Seumas Azaryah Keelan, Kees Dieffenthaller, Maha Productions, and several East Indian entertainers.
Speaking with Sunday Newsday, Ravi B who recently collaborated with Montano and Azaryah on the song Precious Angel, said he hoped the unity spawned from the tragic incident does not wither away.
