World leaders set for pivotal environmental assembly

In February 2021, representatives of the 193 Member States of the UN, businesses leaders, civil society and environmentalists from around the world will come together virtually for the fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA), the world’s highest environmental decision-making body.
The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) answers frequently-asked questions about this biennial assembly, which aims to galvanize international action on climate change, pollution and ecosystem loss.
Given the enormity of challenges the world is facing, why are environmental conferences like UNEA important?
UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres has said it best: Humanity is waging a war on nature. And this is suicidal. In 2020, the world faced flooding, wildfires, locust invasions and a pandemic that has brought life-as-we-know-it to a halt. The message could not be clearer.
Ambitious ‘net-zero’ carbon reduction goals are the latest in the evolution of asset owners’ engagement with climate change
More and more asset owners are declaring net-zero goals. Launched in September 2019 with 12 founding members, at the time of writing the UN-convened Net-Zero Asset Owner Alliance (NZAOA) counted 33 members, but there are further investors with net-zero goals that are, for now at least, operating outside the framework of the NZAOA. It is also clear that other pension funds are, or will be, looking to set a net-zero target. Asset managers are also increasingly committing to net-zero, and in December 2020 announced a network of their own, the Net Zero Asset Managers Initiative.

Launch of UN Race to Zero Breakthroughs
UN Climate Change News, 28 January 2021 – The UN High-Level Climate Champions, COP26 President Alok Sharma, COP25 President Carolina Schmidt, together with the UNFCCC Executive Secretary Patricia Espinosa, today launch the Race to Zero Breakthroughs at the World Economic Forum’s Davos Agenda.
Race to Zero is a global campaign to rally leadership and support from businesses, cities, regions, and investors for a healthy, resilient, zero-carbon recovery that prevents future threats, creates decent jobs, and unlocks inclusive, sustainable growth. Reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions by the middle of the century is crucial to achieve the temperature goals of the Paris Agreement on climate action, with clearly defined interim goals.

Following Year of Death, Disaster, Despair, Secretary-General Outlines Priorities for 2021, Telling General Assembly âCrisis Gives Rise to Changeâ
Following are UN Secretary-General António Guterres remarks to the General Assembly s informal briefing to Member States on priorities for 2021, held today:
2020 was a global
annus horribilis - a year of death, disaster and despair. The COVID-19 pandemic unleashed havoc in every country and every economy. We lost 2 million lives, including many dear members of our United Nations family. The human toll continues to multiply. The economic costs continue to mount. Five hundred million jobs - gone. Extreme poverty - back up to levels not seen in a generation. Inequalities widening. Hunger rising again. And global fragilities continue to be exposed.
