Move over, cows: plant-based food is making a killing
The market is becoming increasingly crowded as consumers are concerned about the health and environmental impact of their diets
Oatly Group AB’s (NASDAQ:OTLY) stellar debut last week was a sign that the plant-based trend is much more than a fad, although experts say it will be another few decades before it takes over animal-derived products.
Nonetheless, more and more companies are joining this crowded market, which is becoming increasingly competitive and more attractive for investors. There s even a dedicated cruelty-free fund, US Vegan Climate ETF (NYSE:VEGN).
Brands are tapping into the new opportunity as nearly half of the world’s consumers are cutting their intake of animal-based products without following a strict vegan diet, according to Euromonitor.

The first entirely meatless Burger King location will open for a limited time this summer in Cologne, Germany. From June 7 until June 11, the vegetarian Burger King will only serve plant-based meat options made by European brand The Vegetarian Butcher at the Cologne location. During this time period, Burger King Germany will also debut its newest item: a plant-based version of The Long Chicken (also called Chicken Royale in other countries), a plant-based chicken sandwich served with vegan mayonnaise on a long sesame seed bun.
In September 2020, Burger King added vegan chicken nuggets made by The Vegetarian Butcher to its menu in Germany. The soy-based nuggets which are now fried in a separate fryer used for plant-based products are offered with vegan dipping sauces. German customers can also order the Rebel Whopper at Burger King, which features a plant-based patty also made by The Vegetarian Butcher.

There has been great excitement around
Oatly(NASDAQ: OTLY) shares being listed on the stock market in the US. Investors are enthusiastic about the company’s strong brand. They also like its strategic positioning that capitalises on a consumer shift to vegan food and drinks. I see value in those attributes too – but there’s a company I think can capitalise on them more than Oatly.
