Farmers frustrated as cows invade Ekiti farms, destroy ready-for-harvest maize

Farmers frustrated as cows invade Ekiti farms, destroy ready-for-harvest maize Abiodun Nejo Ekiti State-based farmer, Tunde Afe, is still counting the losses he incurred after cows destroyed his farm thrice, the latest being in January 2021. It was gathered that some herdsmen led cows to graze on the farm. Afe, who is a cleric in the state, said his cassava farm was destroyed by cows a fortnight ago in Itapaji, Ikole Local Government Area of the state. He added that destruction of farms by herdsmen’s cattle was routine in the state. He said, “Parts of my cassava farm at Itapaji Ekiti were eaten up by cows two weeks ago. Farmers have stopped reporting to the police because nothing came out of all the reports made so far. The Fulani herdsmen are wreaking havoc in Ekiti. This is the third time they are destroying my farm.”

Farmers urge Buhari to sustain maize importation ban

The President, MAAN, Bello Abubakar, made the appeal while briefing newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday. He said that the importation of maize grains at this crucial period would serve as disincentive to maize production, maize farmers and food chain system in the country. Abubakar said that the agitation of Poultry Association of Nigeria and others seeking maize importation would affect maize production in Nigeria. The Federal Government through the CBN has approved the release of 300,000 metric tonnes of maize grains from the Strategic Grains Reserve (SGR) to ameliorate the adverse effect of maize grain price hike and scarcity in the country.

Maize Farmers Oppose Calls for Importation

By James Emejo Maize farmers have criticised recent agitations by some groups for the importation of the commodity as a “calculated attempt to further hinder maize production” in the country. The farmers assured that Nigeria “should be able to achieve at least 25 million metric tonnes (MMTs) of maize before the end of the year” going by the current improvement in local production capacity and funding support from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) under the Anchor Borrower Programme (ABP) as well as expectations that the COVID-19 pandemic would be better managed globally going forward. The farmers also assured that modalities have already been put in place to achieve reduction in the price of maize, which hit the roof in recent times.
