A group, The Liberators, has called on the Lagos State government to choose the best candidate for the position of the Vice-Chancellor of the Lagos State University, LASU, among those jostling for the position.
The group also said there should be no special consideration for any contender.
This followed the Computer-Based Test conducted for the shortlisted candidates on Thursday at the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), Ikeja.
Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, in LASU, Prof. Ibrahim Bakare, urged the Visitor to the institution, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to select the best candidate who would not only maintain the peace being enjoyed now but prioritise workers’ welfare and take the institution to enviable heights.
EXCLUSIVE: Fresh crisis looms as LASU shortlists candidates without PhD for VC position
Two of the candidates shortlisted do not have a PhD despite NUC s position that a fellowship of any professional bodies or organisation cannot be substituted for a PhD.
It appears the management of the
Lagos State University (LASU) has failed to learn from the controversy that led to the recent cancellation of the appointment of a new vice-chancellor for the institution.
The school has again shortlisted two candidates without PhDs (Doctor of Philosophy) for its vacant vice chancellor position despite the position of the National Universities Commission (NUC), the agency that regulates university education in Nigeria, that fellowships of any professional bodies or organisation cannot be substituted for a PhD.

Barring any last-minute changes, Governor
Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State will announce the appointment of a professor of Sociology at the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, Wahab Elias, as the institution’s acting vice-chancellor.
Mr Elias, who is the incumbent deputy vice-chancellor in charge of
academics, would take over from the outgoing 8th substantive vice-chancellor, Olanrewaju Fagbohun, whose tenure ends on Monday, January 11.
The announcement is expected to be made today (Friday) by the chief press secretary to the governor, Gboyega Akosile.
EXCLUSIVE: VC Appointment: LASU submits three names to Sanwo-Olu
The new appointee will be LASU s 9th substantive vice-chancellor.
The governing council of the
Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, has submitted three names of successful candidates to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for a possible appointment as the institution’s 9th substantive vice-chancellor.
The decision followed the result of the
interview conducted for five candidates by a seven-member joint council and senate selection committee.
Members of the selection committee include three professors who were drawn across various departments to represent the university’s senate. They are Barakat Animashaun, Olatunde Owolabi and Babatunde Yusuff. The latter is the incumbent dean of the university’s faculty of business administration.
