Chanel Contos - The Greek-Australian Changing Sex Education In Australia

23-year-old Greek-Australian Chanel Contos is leading an online campaign and changing sex education in Australia. As she revealed, one of the reasons for her campaign was the fact that she, herself was a victim of sexual abuse, at the age of 13. Chanel Contos recently created a website called teach us consent. What is sexual consent? The ability to say yes or no to sexual intercourse and your desire to be respected. But many children often do not know the meaning of consent, nor that the lack of it constitutes rape, until it is too late. Once they have already fallen victim, like Chanel.

Queensland to review sex education amid sexual abuse epidemic

Queensland will review its sex education protocols in schools after learning of a sexual abuse epidemic among teenagers. Chanel Contos, a 22-year-old Kambala School alumni in Sydney, drew attention to the crisis after creating a petition demanding more thorough lessons on consent in classrooms. What started as a Sydney-based petition highlighting a damaging culture among elite private schools soon spread nationwide. Some 5,000 victims have shared harrowing testimonies of being sexually abused as teenagers - with some not realising until years later that they were victims.  The 22-year-old Kambala School alumni received up to 5,000 responses from women sharing harrowing stories of sexual abuse while attending some of Sydney s most elite private schools

How rape allegations among Australia s political elite reignited its #MeToo movement

How rape allegations among Australia’s political elite reignited its #MeToo movement When Australia’s attorney general last week outed himself as the minister accused of raping a 16-year-old girl in 1988, his denial was emphatic. “The things that I have read did not happen, and to suggest that they could be forgotten is ridiculous,” said Christian Porter, who oversees legal affairs and national security, before starting a period of mental health leave. For Prime Minister Scott Morrison, that was the end of the matter. The alleged victim didn’t file a police statement before she died, age 49, last year. After police closed the case last week, citing a lack of “admissible evidence,” Morrison refused to order an independent inquiry into the allegations, which emerged after statements by the alleged victim were anonymously sent to the Prime Minister’s office and two female politicians from other parties.
