Over the course of this summer, I’ll be plotting out and exploring some day trips that can be made in the southwest Missouri area.
For my second entry in this series, I made the quick drive down Interstate 44 from Joplin to Springfield to visit the Johnny Morris Wonder of Wildlife National Museum and Aquarium.
With it raining cats and dogs yesterday, I decided on a day trip for days like those when you’re getting a free car wash, but you still want to get out and do something.
Neosho’s annual FFA Sale set for next week

Neosho High School’s Future Farmers of America (FFA) program will be holding their annual plant sale next week on Apr. 20, 21, 22 and 24.
The sale will be from 3:30 – 6 p.m. on Apr. 20, 21 and 22 and on Apr. 24 it will take place from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
This year’s sale includes bedding plants such as Coleus’, Marigold’s, Impatiens’, Vinca’s, Begonia’s, Wave Petunia’s, Angel Wing Begonia’s, Sweet Potato Vine’s and Geranium’s
Herbs in the sale include Sage, Basil, Oregano, Cilantro, Parsley, Lemon Balm, Peppermint, Thyme, Rosemary and Marjoram.
Neosho graduation to be held at Bob Anderson Stadium

Recently, the Neosho School District (NSD) has hosted graduation at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center at Missouri Southern State University with growing class sizes prompting the move.
Now, with a new turf field at Bob Anderson Stadium, graduation is coming back to Neosho this year on May 13.
NSD Superintendent Dr. Jim Cummins confirmed to the Neosho Daily News he had spoken with the Newton County Health Department about the graduation with the guidance being to maintain distance from other families if possible.
Last year, due to the pandemic, a drive through graduation ceremony took place in front of the high school in June.

1961 Ozark Breakaway: The Year McDonald County Seceded from Missouri celebrates Missouri’s Bicentennial
This year, Missouri is celebrating its bicentennial on Aug. 10.
But another date, Apr. 12, 2021, marks the 60th anniversary of the lesser known date that McDonald County, tucked in the southwest corner of the state, seceded from the state of Missouri.
Dwight Pogue, who grew up in Noel after moving there when he was in first grade and now resides in western Massachusetts after a 46-year teaching career, has written 1961 Ozark Breakaway: The Year McDonald County Seceded from Missouri to commemorate both.
