High School Sports: Shelbyville Central announces new basketball coaches (7/20/21)

Tuesday, July 20, 2021 Submitted photo Director of Schools Dr. Tammy Garrett and Shelbyville Central High School Principal Rebecca Tidwell are excited to announce the hiring of new head coaches for the Eaglette and Golden Eagle basketball programs. “The SCHS basketball program has a rich history of success and we are very excited to have two coaches that understand that history and are willing to embrace it,” commented Garrett. “We are looking forward to seeing the success Coach Kyle Turnham and Coach Kody Howard will bring to both of these outstanding programs.” Kyle Turnham will be taking over as the head coach for the Eaglette basketball program.

Driving the Nashville Freedom Riders to Mississippi While driving for Trailways, his family said one of his greatest accomplishments was driving in 1961 a group of Freedom Riders from A & I (Fisk) University in Nashville to Jackson, Mississippi.  All drivers turned down the job except Ruth who was 23 at the time. Ruth was willing to aid in the cause for freedom and justice at all cost, his family said. In speaking later about his decision to transport the student activists, he said he made the decision that “if  they were going to die, I was going to die with them.”  This trip was a one-time roundtrip for him made during the height of the movement.

Eddy Arnold honored with sculpture, sign in Henderson Eddy Arnold is the biggest name to come out of Chester County, said Henderson Mayor Bobby King. King was one of about 100 people gathered at Sue Shelton White Park in Henderson on Friday to honor Arnold’s legacy with a sign noting his legendary career in the early days of country music. But his legacy was also honored by students at Chester County High School and the dual credit welding program with Tennessee College of Applied Technology-Crump with a sculpture called “Pipe Dreams Do Come True.” It’s a sculpture that looks like a guitar made out of pipes welded together that stands about 10 feet tall.
