Late-charging Dontpokethedragon raised the pressure on tempo-setter Tiempo Hanover, but the seven-year-old Western Ideal gelding passed the beam just in time to take the $8,100 Open Pace at Century Downs on Tuesday (July 20).
Trainer-driver Brandon Campbell took command with Tiempo Hanover, pocketing even-money favourite Icy Blue Scooter to a :27.2 first quarter. Armycaptin Hanover angled first over passing the stands first time and carried Dontpokethedragon into contention through a :56.3 half and towards three-quarters in 1:24. Tiempo Hanover maintained control around the final turn as Dontpokethedragon sprung off cover and rallied in the straightaway. But Tiempo Hanover had enough left in the tank to keep a nose in front at the end of a 1:53 mile. Icy Blue Scooter finished third.
It was a stakes-filled Tuesday at Truro Raceway, as stars of the Atlantic Sires Stakes were out in full force on the eight-race program.
In the first of the two $9,220 ‘A’ divisions for two-year-old pacing fillies it was Woodmere Jazz rolling to an impressive-looking score in 1:57.4 for driver Gilles Barrieau.
He had the daughter of Rollwithitharry-Shadow Dancer on the lead through fractions of :28.4, :59.2 and 1:28.4 before punching home in :29 to win by 2-1/2 lengths over Rhojo Moe. West River Glo was third.

Combs Hanover has put together terrific numbers to start the year for trainer/driver Paul MacDonell, but in order to improve those stats the trotter was going to have to swim with the sharks in the Preferred ranks at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
It was a Tuesday evening test that Combs Hanover passed with flying colours.
Sent off as the 4-5 choice in the $34,000 affair, the gelding got away seventh for MacDonell while Pikachu Hanover fired to the lead and supplied the field with fractions of :27.1, :56.3 and 1:25. MacDonell was eighth and parked at the half with his charge, and then seventh and parked three-wide around the final turn and all the way to the three-quarter pole.
Trainer/driver Kelly Hoerdt put the pedal to the metal with Armycaptin Hanover in Tuesday’s $8,100 Open Pace at Century Downs, and the gelding never looked back en route to a second consecutive victory in the track’s top class.
Leaving from Post 1, Armycaptin Hanover rocketed out and carved out relatively easy, first-half fractions of :28.2 and :58. Icy Blue Scooter came after the leader on the way to the mid-way point, and they battled through a savage third quarter clocked in :26.4. The three-quarter marker flashed up in 1:24.4, and from there Hoerdt’s Armycaptin Hanover kicked home in :28 to win by a head over Icy Blue Scooter in 1:52.4. Third prize went to Tiempo Hanover.
