After pandemic roller coaster, auto sales across north country surge in March

Réal “Frenchie” Coupal has seen it all during his nearly 40 years of owning auto dealerships. But it’s been like a roller coaster ride to get through the COVID-19 pandemic this past year, he said. Last March, the industry was shut down when the virus hit. Fast forward to this March: new auto sales went through the roof. Charles G. Caprara, who owns F.X. Caprara Car Companies with his brother, William F. Caprara, said March was the best month he’s ever had in his 47 years in the industry. “All our brands were strong,” he said. The Caprara family currently operates F.X. Caprara Honda of Watertown, F.X. Caprara Kia of Watertown, F.X. Caprara Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Alexandria Bay, F.X. Caprara of Ogdensburg and F.X. Caprara Harley-Davidson in Adams Center.

Auto dealership planned for West Shore to be one of Island s largest

“It will be state-of-the-art throughout,” said Sabourin. He said the new facility will have 16 staff in an area solely dedicated to virtual sales, a growing side of the business that’s taken root during the pandemic. Sabourin said customers will be able to shop and test drive vehicles virtually, receive quotes and have online appraisals for trade-ins. The dealership, which will employ about 100 people overall, will be head office for the Harris Auto Group, which has Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep Ram dealerships in Duncan and Nanaimo, KIA and Mazda dealerships in Nanaimo, and a Chevrolet Buick GMC dealership in Parksville. The new Langford-Colwood dealership will have extra staff to provide vehicle pick-up and drop-off service anywhere in the capital region, said Sabourin. “It’s one thing the pandemic has taught us about customer service,” he said.
