Nurse pay offer fails safety test

Nurse pay offer fails safety test 30 Jul 2021 15:30 PM More Related Stories HASH(0x3c22348) Nurses have rejected the latest pay offer because it fails to address their concerns about patient safety. Kerri Nuku from the Nurses Association says even before Covid-19 the health system was in crisis, and they see little prospect of improvement - even from the pending health sector reforms. Now we ve got an issue where we ve got burned out nurses working in a system which isn t responsive, working in a system where when you go to work on shift you might be one of two nurses caring for a significant number of patients with a high level of complications. That puts the nurses but also the patients at a certain degree of risk, she says.

Nurses reject government s latest pay offer, strikes back on the table

The NZNO lifted a notice for a 24-hour strike on 29-30 July so members could consider and vote on an amended offer, but strikes planned for 19 August and 9-10 September will go ahead unless an acceptable offer is made . NZNO lead advocate David Wait said that while the DHBs had made promising moves on pay, the offer contained too many ambiguities . Members have been clear from the beginning that their safety at work and the safety of their patients is a priority, and that is where they most deserve certainty.

They had held an eight-hour strike early last month before returning to negotiations with district health boards over pay and conditions. An agreement to take the offer to members was announced this afternoon and the August strike notice has been lifted. The other two may still go ahead if the offer is not accepted. Health Minister Andrew Little said he would not go into full detail but it was an improved pay offer with two pay components.
