Cloris Leachmann, the American actress, who has died aged 94, was never regarded as a star as such, yet by dint of her versatility, remarkable energy and easy talent enjoyed a career lasting more than 70 years on stage and screen, appearing in everything from Lassie to Young Frankenstein; along the way she picked up, almost unnoticed, an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and a record number of Emmy television awards and nominations.
