Police front desk in Bicester to close for good

THE public-facing desk at Bicester Police Station is being permanently closed as part of a force-wide cut to front counter services. The move, which comes after a consultation by Thames Valley Police, will also see help desks close at Kidlington South HQ and Witney police stations. Thames Valley Police says the closures aim to adapt to the different ways people now want to make contact with officers, such as via telephone or online. Conservative Cherwell District and Oxfordshire County Councillor for Bicester South Dan Sames says he very rarely used the front desk in Bicester. He said: It’s always worrying when there is a change in service, however, we need to ask when we last used the service being removed? Personally in the 24 years I’ve lived in Bicester I think I’ve had one visit to the front desk.

Network Rail delivers £116M of upgrades over the Easter weekend

Network Rail delivers £116M of upgrades over the Easter weekend More than 600 projects were undertaken on the UK rail network over the four day Easter weekend including two bridge pushes to upgrade an underpass below the Chiltern main line at Bicester. The £12.3M scheme involved moving two precast concrete underpasses, weighing up to 1,600t, into position below the rail line to reduce traffic congestion in Bicester as part of a project for Homes England, Oxfordshire County Council and Cherwell District Council. After removing 400m of track, engineers from Story Contracting and Network Rail excavated 21,000t of ground from the embankment the precast units were moved into position using a Mammoet self-propelled modular transporter.

Covid hotspots are often the poorest and most crowded areas of Oxfordshire

Ansaf Azhar, Oxfordshire’s Director of Public Health, said it was often neighbourhoods across the county with high population density, where people had low-paid jobs in services or manual labour, where Covid spread more quickly. According to the latest data for the week ending January 29, the rate of infection per 100,000 people in Oxford is currently 257.1, and in Cherwell District, which covers Banbury, it is 238.5. In other districts it is lower: South Oxfordshire is 146.4, Vale of White Horse is 151.5; and West Oxfordshire is 135.6. Mr Azhar said: “One of the things we have realised since the lockdown is some of the deprived communities have higher rates because they are also the ones who have to leave home to work. But that is not an Oxfordshire trend, that is across the UK.”
