The Runaways were an all-female American rock band that recorded and performed from 1977-1979. The band released four studio albums and one live album during its run. Among their best-known songs are “Cherry Bomb”, “Hollywood”, “Queens of Noise” and a cover version of the Velvet Underground’s “Rock & Roll”. Never a major success in the United States, the Runaways became a sensation overseas, especially in Japan, thanks to the single “Cherry Bomb”.

The Runaways were formed in August 1975 by drummer Sandy West and guitarist Joan Jett after they had separately introduced themselves to producer Kim Fowley, who gave Jett’s phone number to West. The Runaways were an all-girl 1970shard rock/proto-punk band which launched the careers of Joan Jett and Lita Ford. Although the band was largely dismissed at the time as a novelty act by US audiences, they gained a large following in Europe and especially Japan, and have since been credited as being important pathbreakers in allowing women into hard rock as legitimate songwriters and musicians, and have also been viewed as a seminal influence on the then-emerging genre of punk rock. Their best known song is the rebellious teen anthem Cherry Bomb, which Jett wrote for lead singer Cherie Currie as a pun on her first name.
