Some Accra central traders to be relocated

The move is to ease congestion and ensure free flow of vehicular traffic within Accra. The targeted groups are traders who engage in bulk breaking activities in some of the busy markets in the metropolis. The market The Adjen Kotoku Market, which is a bulk breaking market complex, was started in 2008 and completed in 2011. It was originally built to accommodate traders in the Agbogbloshie Market to ease congestion in the area.

  The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr Henry Quartey, has charged corporate institutions within the capital to bear some level of responsibility and support the sanitation campaign under the “Make Accra Work” project. To this end, the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly will ensure that corporate bodies who leave their gutters choked and allow scrap dealers to operate on their frontages would be fined. Mr Quartey made the call at a stakeholder meeting ahead of a decongestion exercise along the Accra-UTC road to the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange which has been scheduled to take off on Tuesday, May 18.

The exercise, which will soon be extended to the Ritz Junction and the Atomic Junction, will help enhance the flora beautification and improve the traffic situation in the area. Observations The Daily Graphic, during an inspection tour with the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr Henry Quartey, yesterday, observed that the open spaces which used to be occupied by traders and hawkers had been converted into nicely fenced gardens, with the installation of some street lights to brighten the area during the dark hours.
