The World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) held its annual congress in Vienna, Austria last week, talking to the theme “Taking Publishing to the Next Level”. It also presented its yearly update of current trends shaking up the world of newspapers. The big message was: newspaper circulation might have declined, but it has been made up by an increase in digital audiences. At the same time, newspapers still reach more people than the Internet.
“Circulation is like the sun. It continues to rise in the East and decline in the West,” said Christoph Riess, CEO of WAN-IFRA, who presented the annual survey [last] Thursday at the Congress and World Editors Forum.

Tech giant Google is expanding its programmes and partnerships in the Asia Pacific that are aimed to help publishers take advantage of digital technology. As publishers reassess their business models, Google has rolled out various programmes like Google News Initiative (GNI), digital growth training, the launch of Subscription Labs, and investment in fact-checking to combat the menace of fake news.
Google APAC Head of Media, News & Entertainment Partnerships Rohan Tiwary has provided an update on the company s support for Asia’s news industry.
The continuing Covid-19 pandemic, plus fears over a second wave, was cited as the biggest concern by 13% of those taking part in the survey (which was carried out about six months ago, before cases rose over the winter and the vaccine roll out began).
The World Press Trends report, published by the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), found paid-for digital content was the top investment priority for 2021 – followed closely by reader revenue technology.
Asked “what is the single most important change that has to be implemented in their organisations in the coming year?” 44% said accelerating digital transformation strategy – likely focusing on audience-first, reader revenue, data and product development projects.
