NorthJersey.com wins 35 awards in annual state journalism contest Replay Video UP NEXT The Record and NorthJersey.com won 35 awards in the New Jersey Press Association s annual Better Newspaper Contest, including top honors for extensive coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic in New Jersey. Singled out was the Loved and Lost series, a statewide media collaboration with the Center for Cooperative Media at Montclair State University that set out to name and celebrate the life of every New Jersey resident lost to COVID-19. That was recognized with a first-place Innovation Award.  Photographers Amy Newman and Michael Karas won first-place awards for their photos and video of the Madonna Multinational Home for Funerals in Passaic, depicting its struggles as it was overwhelmed by COVID-19 funerals. Newman also won the NJPA s Best of Show award for her photos of the funeral home.

(Centurion/Bucks County Community College) NEWTOWN, PA The student newspaper of Bucks County Community College took home a record 17 awards in the statewide 2021 Keystone Media Contest. The Centurion, which competes in the two-year college division, has won more than 130 awards since 2010 in the contest run by the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association. Students won awards for articles and news videos for its coverage of student government elections, a fatal shooting at Nockamixon State Park, the COVID-19 pandemic and the presidential election.

In addition to the general excellence award, The Star-Ledger also took home top honors in various editorial, advertising and photography awards with much of the coverage focused on the devastating effects the coronavirus pandemic has had on New Jersey. “Year in and year out, we have proven that we have the best team of journalists in New Jersey,” said Kevin Whitmer, the organization’s lead editor. “The pandemic pushed our journalists to new levels of service and quality journalism. That shows in these results and the fact that millions of readers every day now rely on our work to keep them safe and informed.”
