Gayle King helped announce ViacomCBS’ new multimillion-dollar scholarship to help HBCU students obtain media careers post-graduation and increase the representation of Black journalists nationwide.
On Thursday, the
CBS This Morning host sat down with Willow Bay, Dean of the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, to unveil the ViacomCBS HBCU Diversity in Journalism Scholarship. The scholarship comes by way of a $1 million endowment that recipients will use to cover annual tuition for HBCU graduates to enroll in one of USC Annenberg’s journalism master’s programs.
“This new scholarship demonstrates ViacomCBS and USC Annenberg’s commitment to elevating Black excellence in journalism as well as a tremendous investment in supporting the diverse representation we all seek in the industry,” King said.

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism and ViacomCBS announced today the creation of a new scholarshipaimed at promoting diversity in newsrooms.
The scholarship, supported by a $1 million endowment, will cover yearly tuition costs for one or more graduates of historically Black colleges and universities to enroll in one of USC Annenberg s master s programs in journalism. This new scholarship demonstrates ViacomCBS and USC Annenberg s commitment to elevating Black excellence in journalism as well as a tremendous investment in supporting the diverse representation we all seek in the industry, said Gayle King, co-host of CBS This Morning, in making the announcement at USC Annenberg s virtual celebration for its class of 2021.
The News Leaders Association announced this week that the ProPublica series “The NYPD Files” won its First Amendment Award. The award recognizes the best journalism advancing Freedom of Information principles or overcoming significant resistance to the application of the First Amendment.
The series, which investigated abuse and impunity inside the New York City Police Department, started with one question: How does accountability for NYPD officers really work? It became an unprecedented examination of how a veneer of civilian oversight belies the reality that America’s largest police force largely polices itself.
ProPublica’s Eric Umansky, Joaquin Sapien, Topher Sanders, Derek Willis, Moiz Syed, Mollie Simon, Lena Groeger, Joshua Kaplan and Lucas Waldron contributed to the project.

Tampa Bay Times investigative series has won the prestigious Scripps Howard Award in the local/regional investigative reporting category.
The award was announced Wednesday night in a virtual ceremony.
The series, Targeted, exposed a policing initiative in Pasco County that uses an algorithm to identify people that the Sheriffâs Office believed might be likely to commit crimes in the future. About a 1,000 people were monitored under the program, including children.
