With tomorrow being “4/20” an unofficial but growing-in-popularity occasion for recreational marijuana use or for celebrating recreational marijuana AAA last week issued a reminder and a warning about the dangers of impaired driving.
“Often some of the most dangerous drivers on the road” are those who use alcohol and marijuana and “not necessarily at the same time,” AAA said, citing its research released in January. The research found that “drivers who consumed marijuana and alcohol within a 30-day period were more likely to engage in risky behavior like speeding, texting, intentionally running red lights, and aggressive driving.

Look no further than Duluth’s 115 water main breaks over just the past 15 months.
Or the potentially hazardous joints made of lead and the 47 miles of lead water services that are still part of our city’s aging water system.
There’s ample evidence, including here, that America’s infrastructure and water infrastructure, in particular is in dire need of attention, investment, and reconstruction.

Beginning on Oct. 24, dialing a local number in Duluth and across northern Minnesota will require dialing our 218 area code, too. So, 10 taps on the keypad instead of the usual seven that we’ve grown accustomed to over decades.
While that tiny bit of extra effort and hassle might prompt some grumbling, the good, potentially life-saving reason behind the change ought to quiet any complaints. Ten-digit dialing in the 218 area code and in 81 other area codes across the country (but not the 715 area code in Superior and northern Wisconsin) makes possible the establishment of a new “988” emergency hotline number for suicide prevention and mental health crises.
