Tim Walz is marshaling law enforcement help from other states and asking the Legislature for more funding as the state juggles the conclusion of the Derek Chauvin trial and tensions over the fatal police shooting of Daunte Wright. The extra surge capacity of law enforcement is necessary to be prepared for a verdict in the trial, officials said Monday, after deploying unexpected resources last week to respond to protests in Brooklyn Center, where Wright was killed.

Author: Heidi Wigdahl Updated: 11:14 PM CDT April 19, 2021 MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota From Hennepin Avenue to Lake Street, there s an increased presence of Minnesota National Guard service members outside businesses in Minneapolis.  Last Wednesday, more than a dozen soldiers were set up outside Two Bettys Green Cleaning Service s Refill Station on East Lake Street.  Their presence came as a surprise to the staff member who was working at Two Bettys at the time.  The guardsmen have big weapons, like across the outside of their body with their hands on the weapon, and the staff member that was here turned off all the lights and ran and hid because it was really frightening, said Anna Tsantir, owner of Two Bettys. 

Operation Safety Net ramps up in preparation for verdict in Chauvin trial

Created: April 19, 2021 06:06 PM Operation Safety Net is ramping up as the jury begins deliberations.  There are 3,000 soldiers and airmen from the National Guard in the metro. The state is also calling in 128 extra patrolmen from the Ohio and Nebraska State Patrols for additional surge capacity. But Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo says they will need more than law enforcement. What makes us resilient is our community, he said. A news conference Monday included some of the state s top law enforcement officials, but also representatives from a host of community organizations like the NAACP and New Beginnings Baptist Church. All of them repeated the importance of peace and cooperation at a time when the world is watching.
