Attorney demands Oceanside stop closing homeless encampments

OCEANSIDE  As the city of Oceanside prepares to clear out a second homeless encampment three weeks after removing about 40 people from another site, a San Diego attorney is crying foul and asking for a meeting. The latest encampment targeted for a cleanup is along a stretch of Roymar Road near state Highway 76 that has five tents and other makeshift structures. Last month, the city cleared out a large encampment alongside South Oceanside Boulevard just east of Interstate 5. Attorney Scott Dreher wrote in an email to Oceanside Mayor Esther Sanchez and other City Council members that the city should follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendation to allow people to stay in outdoor encampments during the pandemic because they may be safer than in shelters or other congregate housing.
