Barbados is in the process of a mass Covid-19 vaccination programme, following the donation of 100,000 doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine from India.
And now with over 25,000 people – approximately 12.5 per cent of the adult population – receiving their first shots within just two weeks, Barbados leads the way as the most vaccinated country in the Caribbean.
“This is a commendable start for a country that really did not have a lot in place for a vaccination programme,” prime minister, Mia Amor Mottley, said.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) describes vaccination as a critical tool in reducing the impact of Covid-19 worldwide.

Prime Minister Mia Mottley will update Barbadians on Thursday about the efforts to fight COVID-19 during the current national pause. Barbados has been on restrictions since February 3, 2021 as the COVID-19 virus entered the stage of community spread. There were seven deaths up to mid-January, but the island recorded 25 since then. Operation Seek and Save was resumed for two additional days – today and tomorrow – as Government seeks to reach those households and communities that were missed in the first exercise.
The programme is a national initiative to assess the extent of households at risk from novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and dengue fever.
In a statement from the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus late this evening, lead coordinator of Operation Seek and Save, Dr Dion Greenidge, head of the Department of Management Studies at Cave Hill, where the data gathering system was designed, said the resumption of the operation will serve to get a more complete picture in relation to COVID-19 and dengue fever.
