Smoke⦠alarm. Two words, five letters each. When you think about it in those terms, itâs kind of small. But when you think about what those things actually do -the benefits?âthose are big, big, big.
Just in the last month, there have been multiple fires in Acadiana - and in one, investigators say, there was no smoke or fire alarm to be found.
So, isnât it great that - year-round, actually the Lafayette Fire Department is part of a statewide program called âOperation Save A Lifeâ. And this makes it even greater: Firefighters will not only bring to you a brand-new fire alarm, but theyâll install it as well.

UPDATE: State Fire Marshal (SFM) deputies have concluded their investigation into a camper trailer fire that claimed the life of a Sunset man.
Shortly after 8 a.m. on February 20, the New Iberia Fire Department responded to a call for a camper trailer fire located in the 1700 block of Juanita Street.
A relative discovered the victim and remnants of a fire when bringing the occupant breakfast. While official identification and cause of death are pending an autopsy, the victim is believed to be the 81- year-old camper owner who had traveled from his property in Sunset to the relativeâs property in New Iberia due to the winter weather threat across the state.
Sunset Camper Owner Likely Died From Water Compartment Fire
A Saturday fire that took the life on an Acadiana man was likely caused by a fire that began with the water compartment of a trailer the man lived in according to a press release by the State Fire Marshal s Office.
Spokeswoman for the State Fire Marshal s Office Ashley Rodrigue says there was a smoke alarm in this camper, but, unfortunately, the smoke alarm was likely not working. When they went in after the fire, they suspect that it was just not working.
Rodrigue says the 81-year-old man, in a effort to flee more severe winter weather, took his camper trailer from Sunset to New Iberia. He was staying on his own property, but then drove to a property in New Iberia that belongs to one of his family members.
