TOMORROW is the last day of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence campaign coordinated by the Centre for Women’s Global Leadership. It is also International Human Rights Day.
Over the past few weeks, organisations and advocates have been starting and sustaining conversations about gender-based violence, women’s rights, and human rights. These awareness-raising events are important, but they come and go, only having lasting impact when our work continues.
Almost every time there is a conversation about women’s rights, someone says, “What about the men?” When we talk about violence against women, it is almost guaranteed that someone will say, “Men experience violence too.”

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) are an opportunity for individuals and organizations around the world to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls. It is also a time to reflect on the continued resilience of women in fragile states.
In fragile states, women are already disproportionately affected by conflict. Similarly, the COVID-19 pandemic has a gendered lens, with GBV on the rise amid lockdowns and stay-at-home orders.
In Democratic Republic of Congo, the World Bank partners with Panzi Hospital to provide emergency support to survivors of GBV. Dr. Denis Mukwege, co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, provides some reflections on laying the foundations for recovery, resilience, and empowerment.
