Using proactive safety practices can reduce recordable incidents on construction jobsites by up to 85%, according to the findings of the 2021 Safety Performance Report, published by the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) to coincide with Construction Safety Week, May 3-7. According to the ABC, the report is an annual assessment designed to further the construction industry’s understanding of how to achieve world-class safety by deploying its STEP Safety Management System.
The annual report details the impact of using the proactive safety practices outlined in the STEP system, citing the ability to reduce recordable incidents by up to 85%. This means the best-performing companies utilizing STEP are more than six times safer than the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics industry average.

+ May 01, 2021 DESPITE experiencing a 7.9 percent unemployment rate in Central Visayas during the start of the Covid-19 pandemic last year, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) 7 said they are now seeing signs of slow growth in employment this year.
But PSA 7 officials warned that the unemployment rate in the region could increase again if workplaces fail to strictly implement health protocols to protect their workers from coronavirus disease 2019 transmission.
During the PSA 7’s Economic Performance Report, Leopoldo Alfanta Jr., PSA 7 chief statistical specialist, said that as of January this year, the employment rate was 92.1 percent.
Before the pandemic, Central Visayas maintained an employment rate of above 95 percent.

Published to coincide with Construction Safety Week, May 3-7, the annual report details the drastic impact of using proactive safety practices to reduce recordable incidents by up to 85%, making the best-performing companies more than six times safer than the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics industry average.
The Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) has reported a 51 per cent increase in customer complaints in 2020, compared to 2019.
In a release, the OUR said there were 6,345 contacts during the year, compared to 4,190 in the prior year.
Matters relating to Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) received the highest number of complaints when compared to the other utility companies. There were 2,448 complaints about JPS in 2020, up from 1,571 in 2019, registering a 56 per cent increase.
The National Water Commission (NWC) received the second highest number of complaints - 1,253 in 2020, compared to 984 in 2019, a 27 per cent increase over the year.
The OUR said billing matters accounted for 49 per cent of the contacts during the year, and reflected a 61 per cent increase over 2019, as there were 3,109 complaints received relative to billing in 2020, compared to 1,927 in 2019.
