In the middle of New York City’s bustling streets, right by the Brooklyn Bridge, you’ll find a new, colorful, pop-up art gallery. It shares a story best told through the work hanging on the walls. A story of ambition. A story of grief. And a story of perseverance.
The Happy Jack Gallery celebrates the life of the late Jack Nathan, a University of Denver student who died in the summer of 2020. The walls are covered with Jack’s creations and with the work of a close friend, DU student Eli Bucksbaum. The gallery raises awareness for mental health a mission Jack, who contended with anxiety and depression, supported through the launch of his clothing company Happy Jack.

Mental Health Action Day, to be held on Thursday, May 20 in partnership with more than 800 leading brands, nonprofits, government agencies and cultural leaders, including the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Active Minds, Inc., and the Jed Foundation (JED).

Victor Ficarra, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business, was the student speaker at the morning ceremony. He was president of the Lion Ambassadors, captain of the tennis team and a member of the basketball team, a peer tutor and a Schreyer Honors scholar. He plans to attend law school this fall.
Ficarra told of realizing that he chose his first major for the wrong reasons and embracing change as an opportunity, rather than a sign of failure.
“It is at the moments of change in our lives where we are quite literally picking a new direction for ourselves, and we must be willing to pick these directions and run with them,” he said. “Along the way, we must also be capable of seeing new opportunities as they present themselves. Making changes and taking on new opportunities can be absolutely terrifying but that feeling of gratification and fulfillment when it all works out is what has kept me g
