Even though the first generation of the 2 Series Active Tourer has been a runaway hit in Europe, BMW was rumored to be changing priorities and concentrate more on crossovers than MPVs, with a replacement of the compact minivan seeming unlikely at one point. 19 photos
It turns out all those rumors were phooey all along because as early as 2019 we got our first look at the second generation of the MPV during testing.
Always to be remembered as the first-ever production BMW based on a front-wheel-drive platform with transverse engines, the 2 Series Active Tourer has also spawned the longer and more accommodating 2 Series Gran Tourer.

The next-generation BMW 2 Series Active Tourer isn t the most exciting BMW coming down the pipe. It s a boxy family hauler better suited for cruising around town instead of tackling the Nurburgring, though it has shown promise at the famous track. A new video has again captured the 2 Series AT out testing, though it s still covered in camouflage. However, the video does capture the car s surprisingly spunky exhaust note.
It s not a grand chorus of combustion from eight or twelve cylinders, though it is a throaty, raspy buzz one wouldn t normally expect from such a vehicle. But don t let the noise fool you. BMW is expected to use the family of engines it offers in the 1 Series, which means we ll see the 2 Series AT receive three-cylinder turbocharged gasoline and diesel engines. For example, the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is just as far away from being a Nurburgring champion as a Toyota Rav4 but that hasn’t stopped BMW from bringing its upcoming people-mover to the ‘Ring anyway.
