WhatsApp announces face and fingerprint unlocking for desktop and web app

WhatsApp has announced new security features for its web and desktop versions that make it easier for users to login securely. WhatsApp Web and desktop now supports both face and fingerprint unlocking when linking devices. WhatsApp does note that it never sees your face or fingerprint data.
The new biometric options are available in the latest version of the application, and there’s a full instruction sheet on how to activate the feature. Users will need to open the app on the phone and tap more options on Android devices or go to settings on the iPhone. Android users can then click Link A Device and follow the on-screen instructions to activate biometric authentication if their phone supports those features.
WhatsApp on Thursday rolled out a new feature for the web version of its messaging service. The feature will require users for their device s facial or fingerprint authentication in addition to scanning the QR code for accessing the platform on the computer. This will limit the chance that a housemate or officemate (when we have those again) can link devices to your WhatsApp account without you. This builds on our existing security measures today, which pop up a notice in your phone whenever a Web/Desktop login occurs, and the ability to unlink devices from your phone at any time, said the Facebook-owned platform in a statement.

The Delhi High Court (HC) during a court hearing on January 25 said that accepting the new privacy policy of WhatsApp was a “voluntary” thing and one can choose not to use or join the platform if one did not agree with its terms of services updated by the messaging platform. The HC heard a plea by a lawyer challenging that the new privacy policy violates the right of privacy of individuals. WhatsApp updated its privacy policy earlier this month with a deadline to accept it by February 8. After the public outrage and users moving to Signal and Telegram, the messaging platform pushed the deadline to accept the policy to May 15.
