In recognition of the U.S. Foreign Service (observance May 7), let us in particular salute Marie Yovanovich, former ambassador to Ukraine, whose job was abruptly and unjustly terminated on May 20, 2019, due to political dirty tricks during the Trump re-election campaign. Her eloquent testimony during the first Trump impeachment trial did great honor to the State Department in spite of Secretary Pompeo and a president who cared nothing for integrity or the national interest.
I take pride that Ms. Yovanovich held firm to her oath of office and that she was nurtured in our state of Connecticut.

The 70th United States Secretary of State, Michael Pompeo, visited The Catholic University of America’s campus this week to make a speech regarding the significance of religious freedom.
Former Secretary Pompeo’s political career thus far includes being a United States House Representative from Kansas, CIA director, and, most recently, 4th in the line of succession as Secretary of State in former President Donald Trump’s cabinet. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, NY.
The event took place at Catholic University’s Heritage Hall and was hosted by the College Republicans. Only 50 people were allowed for in-person attendance due to COVID-19 restrictions. Tickets sold out online within minutes.

President Donald Trump says Republicans scored a victory in Wednesdays congressional hearing, and he is declaring the impeachment inquiry “over.”
During a visit to an Apple assembly plant in Texas, Trump highlighted the testimony of Gordon Sondland, ambassador to the European Union, who testified that the president wanted “nothing” from Ukraine.
Trump says, “Not only did we win today, it’s over.”
But Sondland also declared that Trump and his lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, explicitly sought a “quid pro quo” with Ukraine, leveraging a White House meeting for political investigations of Democrats. Sondland testified it was his “understanding” the president was holding up nearly $400 million in military aid in exchange for the countrys announcement of the investigations.
