Regional Councils as defined by the Constitution of Cameroon are institutions that have control of cultural, economic, educational, social, health and sports-related issues in the regions. The election of regional councillors on December 6, 2020 through indirect universal suffrage, the election of Regional Presidents and their Bureau members, their swearing in, the holding of a session as of right and the appointment of Secretary Generals of Regional Councils, make the institution complete for work at deepening the decentralisation process in Cameroon. The ten regional councils across the territory therefore have the uphill task of implementing various stipulations of the General Code on Regional and Local Authorities that concern them. As Kenyans join the rest of the world in marking International Labour Day on Saturday, it will be the 19th time Francis Atwoli will be in the limelight having been at the helm of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu) since August 2001.
And it appears Kenyans will have to wait much longer for a new face to preside over the occasion and, by extension, lead in championing of workers’ rights in the country. This is after the 71-year-old Atwoli was given a fresh five-year mandate as Cotu Secretary General by its 250 delegates on April 9.
The flamboyant Cotu boss retained the seat unopposed during the elections held both virtually and physically at the Tom Mboya Labour College in Kisumu after his only opponent, Seth Panyako, the secretary general of Kenya National Union of Nurses, withdrew from the contest.

President of Armenia Armen Sarkissian has sent letters to Secretary General of the Council of Europe Marija Pejčinović Burić and Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Helga Maria Schmid, over the urgent issue of Armenian prisoners of war and civilians who are held captive in Azerbaijan. Mr. Sarkissian noted that Armenia is expecting support from the international partners over the quick return of all POWs and detained civilians from Azerbaijan, the Armenian President’s Office told Armenpress.
