Ohioana Literary Trail: Natalie Clifford Barney ahead of her time Sharon Short © Provided by Dayton Daily News Natalie Clifford Barney We continue the tour of local stops on the Ohioana Literary Trail (http://www.ohioana.org/rescources/the-ohio-literary-trail/) with the marker for Natalie Clifford Barney, a Dayton native (born Oct. 31, 1876) who was 100 years ahead of her time in being an out lesbian, and writing and publishing love poems to women. She also conducted a literary salon for more than 60 years, after becoming an expatriate in Paris, which influenced numerous literary luminaries, including Truman Capote. Her marker is located in Cooper Park (East Second Street and North St. Clair Street, in Dayton), in the park’s southwest corner, near the Dayton Metro Library main building.

Making spirits bright, Centreville spreads Christmas cheer with decorating contests

CENTREVILLE — In the annual tree decorating contest conducted by the Town of Centreville, the top three winners were announced Wednesday evening, Dec. 2, during the Centreville Christmas tree lighting. Centreville Town Council’s Tim McCluskey presented the top three winners from the more than dozen trees that had been judged: in third place, Girl Scout Troop 1271; second place was awarded to Day Care, Inc.; and first, for the second consecutive year, Girl Scout Troop 446. The contest is sponsored annually by both the Centreville Town Council and the Centreville Park Advisory Board. This year’s theme to decorate the trees was “Centreville Christmas Memories and Dreams.”.
