National history is more than oral stories

National history is more than oral stories By Peng Ming-min 彭明敏 So-called “oral history” seems to have become the latest fashion among historians. My experience with this phenomenon is that when the person writing the history conducts an interview with the subject, they bring in one or two young people with them to take notes. Unless the interviewees have the training required to objectively recall their memories, they are free to provide an imaginative retelling they can say whatever they want, promote themselves or freely criticize others. Oral histories are published based on a recorded interview and notes, without the verification or controls done at newspapers. Using this approach, publishing two or three books a year is not a problem.

Notes from central Taiwan: Taiwan s spent nuclear fuel problem

Notes from central Taiwan: Taiwan’s spent nuclear fuel problem In the first of a two-part interview, Rene Vienet discusses the role he played in the development of the nation’s nuclear power By Michael Turton / Contributing reporter I spent this week chatting online with French film-maker, publisher and historian Rene Vienet, who began his two decades of involvement with Taiwan’s nuclear power program in the late 1970s as the representative for the French nuclear firm Cogema (today known as Orano). We discussed his work in Taiwan over the years, and the tough decisions involving spent nuclear fuel currently facing Taiwan’s policymakers. The second part of the interview will appear on March 22. The interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.

If There Is Conflict in the Taiwan Strait, Will the US Really Send Troops? – Watching America

Posted on March 13, 2021. On Feb. 25, a Kuomintang think tank held a symposium, “The Chinese Communist Party’s Military Threat to Taiwan,” in which the following question was discussed: If the CCP takes military action against Taiwan, will U.S. aircraft carriers come to the rescue? Symposium participants retired Gen. Herman Shuai, former Minister of National Defense Andrew Yang and National Policy Foundation Convener Lin Yu-fang offered differing perspectives. However, they all agreed that to get votes, the Democratic Progressive Party administration continues to deceive the public by saying that the U.S. will certainly send troops to help Taiwan when something happens in the Taiwan Strait.
