3 US senators call for De Lima s full exoneration after dismissal of one drug case

News Published February 19, 2021 10:01am Three United States senators have called for Senator Leila de Lima s full exoneration from the drug charges filed against her after a Muntinlupa City court junked one of her three cases. In a joint statement posted on Twitter, Senators Edward Markey, Dick Durbin and Patrick Leahy reiterated that De Lima has been unjustly detained on politically-motivated charges. While we are pleased that one of the three illegitimate charges against Senator De Lima has been dropped, it is clearly not enough, the US senators said. The Muntinlupa Regional Court earlier this week dismissed the drug case against De Lima and a certain Jose Adrian Dera by granting her demurrer to evidence a pleading seeking the dismissal of the case due to weak prosecution evidence.

Legislators, Online Petition Put Pressure on Biden to Support Recurring Stimulus Checks

Legislators, Online Petition Put Pressure on Biden to Support Recurring Stimulus Checks On 2/1/21 at 11:41 AM EST Congress is gearing up for a battle over a third round of stimulus checks worth $1,400, but 2 million people have a larger relief package in mind $2,000 payments on a recurring basis. A petition on Change.org that started last year when former President Donald Trump was in office continues to gather signatures after President Joe Biden took office. Denver restaurant owner Stephanie Bonin, who started the petition, argued in a recent update that a third payment isn t enough to help families struggling because of the pandemic. The measure is unlikely to gather the support needed to pass Congress, but the measure has support from a prominent person in Biden s administration Vice President Kamala Harris.

Young Fishermen s Development Act passes Congress

Doreen Leggett CHATHAM Ken Baughman has fished since he was a kid and loves being on the water. The Falmouth resident, smart and determined, bought a second-hand motor, built his own boat and launched his career as a commercial fisherman this summer. It has been tough going.  “It’s virtually impossible. You really have to come in as an apprentice,” he said. That may soon be a possibility as the Young Fishermen’s Development Act passed Congress this week. The act, modeled after the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s successful Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program, creates the first federal program dedicated to training  the next generation of commercial fishermen and includes an apprenticeship program to connect retiring fishermen and vessel owners with new and beginning fishermen.
