It’s not a new cottage industry in Alabama political circles to speculate about possible candidates to run for the U.S. Senate in 2022 in anticipation of 86-year-old Richard Shelby’s retirement, which he announced Monday after more than four decades in Washington.
Now that the giant of Alabama politics has made his plans known, who will put their name on the ballot to replace him?
This list of prospects to simply run for the Senate not a handicap of the race was put together by AL.com through conversations with political insiders as well as candidates’ histories. And however comprehensive this list may be, you may well be able to develop a separate list without duplication.
U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Alabama) has released a statement, saying “Today I announce that I will not seek a seventh term in the United State Senate in 2022. For everything, there is a season.”
Although I plan to retire, I am not leaving today. I have two good years remaining to continue my work in Washington. I have the vision and the energy to give it my all. I look forward to what is to come for our great state and our great nation. https://t.co/UXNJyc3OPC
His statement goes on to say:
“I am grateful to the people of Alabama who have put their trust in me for more than forty years. I have been fortunate to serve in the U.S. Senate longer than any other Alabamian. During my time in the Senate, I have been given great opportunity, having chaired four committees: Appropriations, Rules, Banking, and Intelligence. In these positions of leadership, I have strived to influence legislation that will have a lasting impact – creating the conditions for growth and opportunity.

The second impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump is bringing back college memories for Angi Stalnaker and a lesson she learned from a beloved political science professor at the University of Alabama.
She recalled her professor, Bill Stewart, writing down the names of the Republican and Democratic senators who, prior to the 1999 impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton, indicated how they would vote before the trial started. Those who did have their minds made up beforehand, Stalnaker recalls Stewart saying, “violated their oaths.”
