Longford Senator wants ESB to commit €500,000 towards developing community facility in Lanesboro

Senator Micheál Carrigy has called on the Leader of the Seanad, Regina Doherty, “to make contact with ESB and encourage them to make a commitment to provide €500,000 in funding to develop a community facility in Lanesboro following the closure of the Lough Ree Power Plant.”
Senator Carrigy went on to say, “I recently met with Kieran Mulvey, Just Transition Commissioner who has put proposals to the ESB to provide this funding for both Lanesboro and Shannobridge however there has been no commitment made by the ESB to date.
Longford Senator Micheál Carrigy slams outrageous decision to put a price on palliative care

An outrageous decision has been taken on putting a price on palliative care for people to be close to their home before the pass away, according to Longford s Senator Micheál Carrigy.
Senator Carrigy raised in the Seanad issues in relation to Co Longford Hospice Homecare. Two years ago myself and a number of my Fine Gael colleagues met with Minister Simon Harris at St Joseph’s Care Centre with members of Longford Hospice where we received agreements for two bed units to be incorporated into a new building that was being developed there, he said.
Longford parkrun in plea to politicians for a return date

Longford parkrun Event Director Kevin Kane has expressed disappointment and frustration that the government is ‘contradicting their own advice by not issuing a parkrun return date’.
The last Longford parkrun took place on March 7, 2020 and on average 100 people of all ages run or walk the 5km weekly event in the Mall.
Mr Kane remarked, “Both Micheál Martin and Leo Varadkar spoke about the theme of the summer being outdoor events, yet parkrun has been overlooked.”
He is thrilled for all those places being allowed to open up, yet is deeply frustrated that a wonderful outdoor health initiative like parkrun has been put on the back burner. “We have detailed reports carried out by epidemiologists stating the risk of transmission at outdoor sporting events is incredibly low risk.”
Refurbishment of iconic 1865 building will bring Longford’s St Mel’s College to new level

The planned refurbishment of the iconic 1865 building at St Mel’s College, Longford moved a step closer to becoming reality with Minister for Education Norma Foley TD indicating today that the project will proceed to design stage.
Minister Foley made the announcement during a virtual meeting that was also attended by St Mel’s College Principal Declan Rowley and Board of Management Chairperson Enda Flynn, along with Deputy Joe Flaherty and Senator Micheál Carrigy.
