Level 5 restrictions breached: Gardaí intervene after more than 50 people gather for funeral

The funeral in Gorey town on Monday night was policed by gardaí. It is understood the deceased hailed from a large family in the region and relatives and friends had gathered in the town for the removal. Fianna Fáil Senator Malcolm Byrne, who lives in the town, told the Seanad there is a “small minority” who think the rules don’t apply to their activities. Senator Byrne said he acknowledged the difficulties gardaí faced. For the majority of people in this country who follow the rules and try their best, it is very difficult to see a small minority who do not follow the rules. In my community in Gorey, there was a funeral last night where over 50 people attended and did not care about social distancing.

Educate Together wins patronage of new Gorey school

Educate Together has won the patronage of the new secondary school in Gorey, which is to open in September 2021. The online patronage contest allowed parents to vote for their preference, with the final decision taken by Minister Norma Foley based off recommendations by the New Schools Establishment Group. Educate Together put forward a bid for the patronage(alongside Catholic body Ceist and the WWETB, and were announced as the successful candidate. Local parent Joanne O Grady, from the Educate Together campaign, said that all the team were very excited about the future. The new school will enhance the current provision available in the town and more students in Gorey will now have the opportunity to avail of their first choice, whether this is Creagh College, Gorey Community School or the new Educate Together Secondary School. Most of all it is a relief for all families in Gorey that they will no longer face the pressure of waiting to hear whether a child has a place or not in

Sinn Féin asked Facebook to remove secret party supporter group

  Sinn Féin has asked Facebook to remove a secret group of 16,000 supporters which some TDs and councillors were members of until this week. The supporters group contained abusive and sometimes violent comments about numerous high-ranking politicians including the Taoiseach and Tánaiste. It was not searchable on Facebook and members could only get access if they were specifically invited. Sligo Leitrim TD Martin Kenny and Clare TD Violet Anne Wynne were listed as members of the group along with multiple well-known councillors. However they left after The Irish Times contacted Sinn Féin this week about messages which had been posted in recent weeks and months.
